My paper profile became invalid even though I didn't change the media or the ink. Why is that?

From time to time it is important to re calibrate the printer. Your printer conditions may have changed slightly, humidity and temperature may have risen, or some other factor may have influenced the color stability. Therefore it makes a lot of sense to re calibrate the printer in order to update the characterizations to the current printer conditions. Your HP Designjet Z printer will let you know when it's about time to do that.

I notice that I can save profiles in the printer. Why should I do that?

HP APS allows you to store the media profile in your printer so that you can share this media profile with other printer users. Instead of having to generate a profile with HP APS on their own, they can just download your profile from the printer and use it in their computer. This also makes a lot of sense in regards to standardization. You will want all users of your HP Designjet Z printer to work with the same profile for consistent output.

The printer is not detected by HP APS - what can I do?

Make sure the printer is turned on and the USB cable or Ethernet cable is properly connected at both ends. Also make sure that your computer has the printer driver installed. If your OS "sees" the printer, the HP APS will, too.

The printer is plugged in via USB but not found by the OS. What's wrong?

You may have plugged in the printer but did not install the drivers. Please consult the HP Designjet Z product CD to find out how to install the drivers for your printer on your system.

What does the printer do before measurements are taken? Why do I have to wait?

The printer is allowing the test chart to dry before measuring it. This is very important to avoid color shifts. Your HP Designjet Z printer determines the correct dry time.

Why can't I use my Eye-One Display 1 with HP APS?

HP APS uses a combination of hardware and software protection. The product activation key that you entered during installation is tied to the serial number of your Eye-One Display 2.

Does cleaning the print head have any influence on the profile quality?

No, you do not have to generate a new profile after aligning and cleaning the print heads.

Is it possible to read charts from ProfileMaker or Eye-One Match with my HP APS?

No, this is not possible. The HP Designjet Z internal spectrophotometer requires a different patch size.

After calibrating my monitor, the summary shows one or several red exclamation marks. What's wrong?

You may have selected targeted values for your white point, gamma and luminance that are not reproducible on your monitor. We recommend repeating the monitor calibration and profiling using "native" settings. Then review the calibration summary and see what kind of value your monitor is reflecting. You may want to adjust the calibration target values in HP APS accordingly before running your next monitor calibration.

My output does not match what I see on-screen, even though I am using new profiles for both. What's wrong?

Please make sure you are viewing your prints in a controlled lighting environment. HP APS allows you to calculate your output profile for a certain light source. If you select D50 as the light source when you profiled your monitor, be sure you are also viewing your prints under D50 lighting when you review them.

I cannot generate a CMYK profile for my Designjet Z3100ps GP printer.

The Z3100ps, although it is a PS printer, it is an RGB printer. Therefore, if you print with the driver, you can only use RGB profiles so will only be able to generate RGB profiles.

If you have a third party software that allows you to print CMYK images (a third party RIP), then you can create CMYK profiles for your Z3100ps. In order to do so, select the “Other Printer [CMYK]” option in the Printer selection field.

I cannot generate the type of profile that I want for my Designjet Z6100 Series printer.

If you have the Designjet Z6100 or the Designjet Z6100ps printer with the HP-GL/2 driver installed, the only profiles you will be able to do are RGB profiles. If you have the Designjet Z6100ps with the PS driver installed, the only profiles you will be able to do are CMYK profiles.
